The City of Armadale recognises the value of trees in our streetscapes and the need to protect trees from vandalism and damage.
The purposeful and unlawful destruction of trees, including by poisoning, felling and pruning, is tree vandalism. If the City believes that a tree has been vandalised, while the matter is investigated, a sign may be placed at the site and a letter seeking information about the vandalism will be distributed to nearby residents.
Trees are an integral part of the City’s Urban landscape contributing significantly to the local character of the community and as such trees are not removed unless absolutely necessary. The vandalism or damage of trees on Council managed land is considered a serious offence.
For people, local governments and neighbourhoods, tree vandalism represents a real expense. It’s important that vandalised trees are inspected, and appropriate action is taken which is a costly exercise especially if it involves the removal of a tree/s.
If the removal of a tree becomes necessary, a replacement tree will be planted. Replacement of a damaged tree with an advanced tree/s is costly to plant and establish, with an advanced tree costing between $500-1000 depending on size, the number being planted and ease of site access.
The actual costs to the City, however, go far beyond these immediate losses. Tree vandalism robs local people of the joys, pleasures and advantages offered by trees. As such the erection of signs may be placed on the verge/area where vandalism has occurred, set as a reminder and to increase public awareness that vandalism to trees is not tolerated.
