We acknowledge Aboriginal people as the First Peoples of this land and their connection to the lands and the waters, as they are part of them spiritually and culturally.

Each year the City plants trees within parks, road reserves and on verges adjacent to residential properties. Establishing trees in residential streets is an essential part of expanding the current canopy cover and offers residents many benefits.
There is an increasing body of research that indicates living in a neighbourhood of tree-lined streets has direct benefits on human health, such as the following;
Improved Mental Health - Lowers incidence of depression, anxiety and cognitive decline
Improved Physical Health - Lowers incidence of chronic health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancers, and
Reducing rates of illness and mortality from heat-related stress in people and animals
The Winter 2025 planting season includes approximately 400 trees planted on verges adjoining residential properties. Areas that lack tree cover or record higher-than-average land surface temperatures nearby are prioritised, being the most likely to be impacted by the heat island effect.
Residents of the homes selected to have a tree planted on their verge will have received notification in March 2024 that a tree will be placed on their verge during the next planting season.
The trees are planted between June and September each year. Planting at this time of year gives trees the best chance of success, as it's more difficult to establish a tree in hotter months.
The City is also increasing the canopy in our public open spaces by planting a further 225 trees in reserves throughout the City.
The City’s parks service team will be responsible for planting, staking, mulching, watering, and fertilising the tree for three summer seasons. The City will then manage the tree for any ongoing requirements such as pruning. Any additional watering you can give the street tree is appreciated and will assist in the tree’s establishment.
